Okay... I don't know 'C' but if I wanted to do something like that I'd
make a wrapper for it and have the ifdefs within the wrapper and replace all
instances of this with the wrapper.
Again, I don't know if this is practical or possible with 'C' and your
implementation, but it's the first thing that popped into my head.
