Harken - Ye Publique Notice
The Hertzian Intercept BBS draws its last breath and officially closes down
for good at 2400-hrs, May 31, 1997. (See my origin line below for current
times and phone number of availability).
My FidoNet node 1:202/731 will remain alive and well for an indefinite period
thereafter, on a MAIL-ONLY basis, up during the Zone Mail Hour only. I will
continue to draw echomnail for a few select echoes, SCANRADIO for sure.
My BBS is being replaced by my Web and FTP sites as follows:
WWW Site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/bcheek
FTP Site: ftp://ftp.cts.com/pub/bcheek
The above sites are mirrored on an experimental basis at my R & D sites which
may be up or down at any given time:
http://204.210.20.47
ftp://204.210.20.47
The days of the BBS are wrapping up and drawing to a close. BBS's just don't
get it anymore in terms of cost and resources of time and equipment. FidoNet
is shrinking weekly and is down by over 5,000 nodes in the last 18-mos.
There is nothing to suggest this trend will be reversed, and so in another
year or two, FidoNet will be only a shell of its former self.
It already shows signs of old age and senile dementia. It may or may not
last forever, but it will be a tiny bit player in the much greater spectrum
of the Information Age. My position is that I have to be moving on with the
times.
The thing that concerns YOU is that many other SysOps are also moving on with
the times and it willl get harder and harder to find a FidoNet BBS that
carries your favorite echoes, including SCANRADIO. This may be the time to
develop your Internet connections, if you haven't already done so. There are
several great newsgroups that go along the lines of SCANRADIO:
rec.radio.scanner alt.radio.scanner.uk de.alt.radio-scanner
alt.radio.scanner aus.radio.scanner phl.scanner
This message has been a public service and is not intended to spark
controversy on the viability and affection of the BBS as we know it. It is
simply an analysis of the handwriting on the wall. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
If I'm right, then I'm right. History will prove it one way or the other.
The "meat 'n taters" of this message is no matter what, you SHOULD be
developing your Internet connections if you haven't already done so. It
takes about a year to "learn the ropes" of the Internet, its ways, and its
software. During the next year or two, nothing will happen to this SCANRADIO
echo, but you can be assured that its days of glory are in the twilight.
It IS time to make your connections with the Internet, and then continue to
enjoy SCANRADIO and FidoNet for all they're worth, for as long as you can.
This topic is hereby open for discussion so long as there are no flames and
no hard-core drifts into off-topic areas.
