On 4/5/97, George Erdner grokked "Prog. Rock defns.", and said to Scott R.
Godin:
SRG> Sooooo where did you get the idea that we ONLY wanted to talk about
SRG> the m and not the people who MAKE the music?
GE> You are the one who asked if we could get back to discussing the
GE> music. (see above). Given that I was discussing music in the first
GE> place, and catching heat because the music I thought sounded like
GE> Prog-Rock wasn't recorded by musicians you regard as qualified to make
GE> Prog-Rock, I thought it best to limit my comments to talking about
GE> MUSIC, not fan club issues. If I wanted to talk about fan club stuff,
GE> I'd go to the Tiger Beat echo.
Well as long as we are now separating the MUSIC from the MUSICIANS why don't
we also just separate them from their INSTRUMENTS and talk about them too?
SRG> Have you heard the Great Deceiver Box set yet? If not it is a
SRG> definite mu have for Crimso fans. Some incredible live moments.
SRG>
GE> No, I have not heard it yet. I am reluctant to fork over cash for
GE> something I haven't heard, so until I hear someone else's copy, I
GE> don't plan to buy my own.
THAT is what this echo is for.
MD> Are you going to go see the reformed Yes on tour this summer?
GE> No.
SRG> WHY NOT?
GE> Because they aren't scheduled to appear at a venue that is within
GE> close geographic proximity to where I am. And besides, I thought yo
GE> wanted to discuss music, not musicians.
GE>
SRG> Ummmmmmmmmmm pardon me for living, but aren't these musicians going
SRG> to MAKE MUSIC while they are touring?????
SRG>
GE> Of course they are, but you didn't ask about that. You asked if I was
GE> going to SEE them. As to their making music, I've been disappointed at
Yes, going to see them MAKE MUSIC. I thought that was understood. I wouldn't
expect you'd take time out from your busy schedule to go watch them eat
biscuits at a local diner.
GE> too many live concerts of Prog-Rock artists to get real enthused about
Gentle Giant Live. Magma Live. King Crimson live. Music is a performance art.
THese three bands IMHO have some of the most impressive live music recorded,
especially when you consider the difficulty of pulling off some of this music
in a live situation. I heard snatches of _Live Hhai_ off of a tape sampling
someone sent me and LOVED it. THEN I heard the cheering at the end and
realized it was _LIVE_... I became impressed.
GE> experiencing them in person. Your basic three-chord headbanger bands
GE> sound about the same in stage as in the studio. Progressive artists
which is why I don't listen to the radio much anymore, and why I spend time
hanging in here..
GE> seem to have a more difficult time replicating studio overdubs and
GE> effects on stage. Because too many of the people who made up Gentle
GE> Giant have retire from music. But what does that have to do with
GE> discussing the MUSIC
I don't understand why having the members of Gentle Giant retire from the
music scene shouyld cause such difficulties for other live bands to pull off
their music convincingly in a live venue.
SRG> SO what's to stop them from re-forming? There have been plenty of
SRG> artists have come out of seclusion in the last 10 years to produce
SRG> another album.
SRG>
GE> Unfortunately, there hasn't been too much good music produced by
GE> artists who've been in seclusion for a decade.
