I'm probably not explaining myself very well. I'm sure I can find packet
drivers, telnet client, all sorts of stuff for accessing the internet via
plain old vanilla dos, as in 6.22.
Have done that before I was using email and usenet offline reader.

I'd say my question is a bit more basic. How to tie this dos box into
network in the first place. I've been told that these days you can't get
there from here.

tHe dsl modem would hang off the box which is router/firewall. A linux box
which handles someaudio production and other chores would also be tied in
with said network, and a win 98 box. rOuter/firwall os is a specialized
flavor of linux called smoothwall.

SOme folks that are fairly savvy in most things computer networking have
told me the old "you can't get there from here" line, but
I"m not sure that's so. Basically seeking clues on tying this thing in
with remainder of the network. YEs, have to put a network interface card in
it, but then it has to see the network .

sInce we'd be doing our own web server, bbs etc. we'd probably also run our
own mail server in-house. wOuld like to be able to do some
otheradministrative tasks with rest of network from this box as well, but
would be satisfied with just interfacing with my local network as I would
the internet, i.e. sendmail, telnet, ftp etc.

thanks for bearing with this old man on this. I'm an audio guy and not a
computer guy really .

Regards,
           Richard
... Amazing how much tape is on a 10" reel when it's not.
