Sounds like it's cheaper to outsource the brewing and canning, yes. And,
you never want to depend on one of your competitors for your company's
product.

Interesting that all of the coverage is referring to PBR as a light beer.
It's watery, but not "light". Miller Lite and Coors Light are probably
brewed right alongside PBR, and therein lies the problem.
