I now have 1 Linux and 2 FreeBSD machines running Samba, they are part of
the Windows network. Every time I start messing with 'set public = no' or
'valid users =' or 'security = ' I run into trouble. So I just leave it
wideopen and try to forget 

Yes, MDaemon does IMAP.
