| subject: | Re: Testing ATX power sup |
* An ongoing debate between Jim Holsonback and Ben Ritchey rages on ... JH: > So which particular automotive light bulbs would you recommend for JH: > testing each of these? (Remembering that the pins of the ATX standard JH: > power connector are rated for 6A Max for each pin). I have a large selection of various bulbs and heater elements I use for loading and testing power supplies, though mostly linear. I have them all labeled as per DC resistance and do the math before selecting a proper loader. I have tested several switching supplies using common 12V auto lamps that pull .25A, 1A and 2.6 Amps at 12.6 VDC, and it worked out fine. The PS regulated and is now in use . I can't claim to be an expert, as my needs are mostly go/no-go testing, NOT certification of manufacturer specs or anything fancy as that. The specs you listed are MAXimums and an auto bulb won't hurt any of them. Do the math ... if the supply doesn't heat up overnight, the headlamp won't hurt either (it pulls 4A at 12V, low beam only is used). JH: > Well, I think if he hooks up an automobile headlamp (or even a 12V JH: > tail or stoplight) to some of those, his PS will no longer "be well". Sure it will, I've done it. Again, do the math.
