Actually I found part of the problem today. It seems I somehow ended up
with mdac 2.1 on a few of my machines (not sure what installed it) which
has never been updated. The latest patch only patches 2.5 and newer. Once I
move the machines to 2.8 the patch applies fine even on NT4 boxes.
