| subject: | PL/I for OS/2 |
On Wednesday, 96/08/14, Harry Bush wrote to David Noon about "PL/I for OS/2" as follows: HB> CD-R's: in less then hour there could be prepared (from image) fresh HB> new CD at current CSD level. Hi Harry, The concept of "production" at IBM is probably one of massive batches of media being written and then stored in a wharehouse until they are needed. Whipping off a few of the latest release would be too small a job for IBM. HB> Hell, even Indelible Blue didn't have PL/I for OS/2 for sale last HB> year at ColoradOS/2 conference, and I must say they had quite HB> acceptable presence there... I purchased several excellent products HB> for special prices ;-) A product manager at IBM released the PL/I compiler as a hardware device, so it wasn't offered to software resellers. He/she really understood the product being marketed ... NOT!! I sometimes wish I were dumb enough to be a product manager. I'd make more money, get to go on trips to all the best customer sites, not have to worry about quality of code, ... HB> Wow, how do you get punched cards into PC? Ah, maybe you simply HB> have some mainframe available and PC linked to it via some kind of HB> "blue glue" :-) I still have some 9-track 800 BPI tapes - relict HB> from VM/SP times but regard them mostly as souveniers now... Oh yes, HB> I did really program in PL/I ... I no longer have access to a card reader. Those things are very scarce these days. I'm afraid I had to type the source code into Tritus SPF or LPEX. Some of the ink on the top of some of the cards had smudged or faded, so I had to read the punched holes myself on those cards.
