Hi Kris!
Thus quoth Kris Steenhaut to Daniela Engert:
KS> Daniela's S506 ADD - Release 1.0.9
KS> If you have a removable drive which you want to boot from,
KS> this reportedly fails. To enable booting from this unit it has
KS> to be treated as a fixed one. This can be done with the option
KS> /!RMV applied to the proper unit. It is reported also that
KS> some Syquest drives have buggy firmware which doesn't report
KS> properly the support of the removable feature set. To announce
KS> these drives to OS/2 a removable drives add the /RMV option to
KS> the appropriate unit.
KS> Afaik, since FP6 the Zips are hardcoded in the OS2DASD.DMD as
KS> removable harddisks. So, why are you saying this?
I know much too little about OS2DASD to comment on this particular item. In
fact, I have no experiences of my own on booting from removable media other
than floppies. The cited paragraph applies to removable ATA devices (like the
Syquests) only, ATAPI devices (like the ZIP) are a different kind and aren't
controlled by the S506 base driver but the ATAPI filter driver.
The term 'reportedly' means that this statement comes from another user (Allan
Holm), on who's request these options were introduced. He has two different
firmware revision of his Syquest removable disk one of which has a bug: it
doesn't identify itself as removable. This buggy version enabled him to boot
from the Syquest, the fixed one failed. So, I added the /RMV /!RMV options
pair to bump this particular bit into the proper direction. Users of removable
ATA disks have the choice now to select between a *removable* disk or a
*bootable* disk.
bye, Dani
