Then you need to set your firewall so that your email/news reader is only
allowed to talk to news/email servers that you have defined. If you were
logged then chances are that any spammer can confirm that you received his
spam and viewed it thus confirming the email address is valid.

You can also be tracked by the fbi or anyone else who want's to know if you
are reading a certain email or newsgroup since the webbug can expose your
IP address at a minimum and a whole lot more if they code the bug right. It
can even stick a cookie on your machine so you can be tracked across a
whole bunch of newsgroups.
