I recently came by a pair old VTRs, a .5 inch Sony AV 5000 and a 1 inch
IVC 825A. Both are reel-to-reel. I know nothing about these beasts,
(capabilities, quality, lack of quality, etc.) but I'd like to make some
use of them - particularly the 1 inch 825A - since they both seem to
work (haven't been able to get ahold of any R2R tape in these sizes
yet to verify, but lights flash, hubs spin, etc.). I'm reasonably
experienced in the design, construction and repair of electronic
gadgetry, but mostly computers and audio. I understand the basics of
video, but haven't worked with it much. Any knowledge, critiques,
anecdotes, opinions, photocopies of operating manuals and/or circuit
diagrams on these dinosaurs, or sources for the above, would be
appreciated. BTW, I already know that they could, as a last resort, make
excellent boat anchors.
OTOH, a 1 inch tape transport is still a 1 inch tape transport. Maybe I
could salvage the chassis, heads, and transport and replace the
signal path with nice, neat salvaged IC circuitry from elsewhere.
Wha'dya think?
