Hi, Tamara.
DH> pathos and fun... all rolled into one. I know a few old-guard
DH> Legion fans who hate what DC did with them after "Zero Hour"...
DH> and have refused to pick the books up since then. IMO, that's
DH> their loss. As
TH> Well, I consider myself an old Legion fan (since the Mike Grell
TH> days anyway ) and I cannot foresee a time when I would ever
TH> stop buying these books. They are sooo much fun.
They sure are. My first exposure to the Legion was when a friend
of mine gave me a copy of "Karate Kid" #1. The second time I
encountered the Legion, it was when they teamed up with the Justice
League and Justice Society to fight Mordru and the Demon's Three.
From there, I actually started reading the occasional issue of
"Superboy & The Legion Of Super-heroes" (the first one I remember was
the one where Ultra Boy was framed for murder... somewhere in the 230s
I believe). They're not my favorite DC super-team (for me, it's
always been the JLA, followed by the JSA)... but they still rate very
highly with me... and right now, I wouldn't dream of dropping either
of the 2 Legion titles.
From a collecting standpoint, I've been pretty actively working
backwards on the various Legion series. I have the entire runs of the
current and last series... and am only missing #201 and #232 (which,
for some really strange reason continues to elude me) to have from
#197 of "Superboy And The Legion Of Super-heroes" and on. I'd also
love to get the "Adventure Comics" issues (I already have a number of
them)... but some of them are pretty pricey, so I may not be able to
get as many of them as I'd like to.
I really wasn't sure revamping/restarting the Legion from scratch
after "Zero Hour" would hold my interest, but as it turns out, my
enjoyment of the series never decreased at all. I love what they've
done with & to these characters, especially with regards to giving
each of them a distinct personality (especially Luornu... who has 3
distinct personalities...). They are wonderful books and I'm
hoping comic fans will start noticing them... before DC decides there
isn't enough readers to justify 2 ongoing books.
BTW, this is probably a good time to say "Thank-you" for posting
the Legion "Chats" in this conference. I always look forward to
reading them.
DH> On a slightly unrelated topic... do you suppose Tom Defalco got
DH> the whole Alicia Masters/Lyja storyline in the "Fantastic Four"
DH> from reading the issues of the "Legion Of Super-heroes" (Vol. 2)
DH> where Shrinking Violet was replaced by the Durlan?
TH> You know what they say, there are no new ideas.... But it does
TH> make you wonder. That was one of my favorite storylines.
I've got a lot of favorite Legion storylines... The Great
Darkness Saga, the destruction of Earth story, the ongoing
developments with Magno (you just can't help but feel sorry for the
guy...), the Violet-imposter story, the various Matter-Eater Lad
stories from early in this series (especially the one where he was
Polar Boy's lawyer...) and the whole Dominators occupation of Earth
from early on in this series (including the Batch SW6 stuff), the
Legion/Fatal Five Vs. the Sun-Eater storyline, the original Computo
story (and the one which appeared in the 1st Legion Annual... which
saw Computo possess Invisible Kid II's sister). Actually, there are
really too many to mention here...
Talk to you later.
David
