While Butch has yet to make a formal announcement of his intent to
drop the moderatorship (is that a word?) of this echo he has indicated
that it may be up to the participants to "elect" a new moderator. At
the risk of incurring his "wrath" (-; I think all the regular posters
and the regular "lurkers" should start thinking seriously about
selecting someone as moderator.
Ernest has done a good job of outlining what technical knowledge a
prospective moderator should have regarding how Fidonet works.
I think the moderator should have some personal experience of ADD/ADHD
as the parent (guardian or significant adult) of a child with the
disorder; as an adult with ADD/ADHD (or both of those); or if we are
fortunate enough to have a professional who works with ADD/ADHD
children/adults. Whoever it might be should be very knowledgeable of
signs/symptoms, diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV) current conventional
treatment modalities; less than conventional treatments; a knowledge
of the history of the various treatments that have been proposed and
why they did or did not become mainstream; alternatives to medication;
access to solid research (or know in what direction to point others);
NOT have a personal ax to grind; be temperate in disposition [well
that one might eliminate a LOT of us right off the bat O-; ]; A
strong working knowledge of IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehab Act and the
relationship between IDEA, 504 and the Civil Rights Act.
I'm real sure that others of you can come up with more that you think
should be expected of a good moderator. It can't hurt to start doing
that now and, if Butch decides not to step down, at least we'll have
thrown out some ideas that should make us all think a bit more and
perhaps draw some of the lurkers into the conversation.
I'm NOT proposing myself for the job, I don't have any patience for
those who jump in here to deliberately misinform and/or try and sell
some noxious combination of tree bark, seaweed, toad sweat or whatever
as "THE CURE" for ADD/ADHD. I don't gladly suffer fools.
Also I already moderate 2 other non-Fidonet conferences and while I do
have netmail access (routed and crash) I'm not running as a full node.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!
