Ever hear of "black body radiation" ?

What about  red-hot, orange-hot, white-hot etc?
Working in a metal trade I expect you've had experice with that...

look up Black Body radiation in an encycliopaedia or a physics textbook.
that is exactly how colour temperatures are determined...
