My son went through the same behavior with homework as your daughter. I
believe that the transition from rote learning to real intellectual challenge
which happens around 7'th grade is what did it, although it's hard to make a
blanket statement. We're still struggling with this issue: he almost got
dropped from Jr. ROTC because the rest of his school work wasn't getting
done, and he's bumping along at the limit of what the teachers allow.
It seems that only the most drastic, "burn your hand on the stove" types of
lesson really sink in.
