As has been mentioned, that is a gloriously stupid message designed to put
you off balance. BTW, I think I noticed it after clicking Advanced on a
Windows Server 2003 the other day...

FYI for Office 2000: You are supposed to install SR1a, then reboot, then
install SP3 (no need for SP2). You can download complete copies of SR1a and
SP3, but the simplest if you don't mind connecting to the Internet to do
the install would probably just be to visit the Office Updates site.

Re your problem: It sounds quite ugly. Frankly, you could have a serious
difficulty. I would give consideration to paying for a phone call to
Microsoft.

Try to backup your critical data real soon now. Check the System log after
doing this to see if there were any disk errors (if there were, your backup
is suspect).

Meanwhile, run chkdsk /f on all disks (it will probably ask you to reboot
to do this for your operating system partition). Keep doing this until
there are no problems. See Event Viewer - all logs, particularly System.

I wonder if "restore to a previous state" would help:

As you can see, I don't get here as frequently as some people... If you
want to continue with me, please give your computers simple names that we
can follow and use them consistently. Tell us what works and what doesn't.
Start with ping by IP address and ping by name.
