LH> Some of our parents are children raising children and this, in my
LH> opinion, is what is creating a blizzard of complaints toward the
LH> school.
In neighboring Guilford County, the most-complaining parents are _not_
those who had kids while teenagers. They are typical middle-class parents,
often with college degrees, who are very upset about the school system's
indifference to the values of most local parents on such things as the
selection of books in HS literature courses (which were so obscene that much
of the parents' reading of passages during a school-committee hearing on
removing the books could not be broadcast on TV news). The parents feel that
they are left out of all decision-making.
LH> I also feel that administrators have become law suit frightened. I
LH> should address this to Matt, however, in replying to you I think
LH> maybe
LH> you should have noticed this, especially in the past seven years. In
LH> our county we have had several against the school regarding
LH> attendance
LH> policies of the state! A few parents have discovered loopholes and
LH> sympathy from one particular judge, regarding the RIGHT to take their
LH> child out when and if they wish no matter how much they are missing.
Many states, including this one, have statutes specifically providing
parents have a right to homeschool.
LH> Never mind the state law. Why do they do this?
Usually because of a deep-seated feeling that the public schools lack
discipline and are hostile to parental values.
