You are using a null modem cable where what you need is a serial
cable suitably modified to cross the RD & TD, RTS & CTS and DSR & DTR
lines.
A null modem cable just passes the signals back rather than thru to
the correct lines.
You may also need to tie the CD high on the BBS end or it may report
lost carrier all the time.
