RS> Yeah, your results were a hell of any eye opener, particularly
RS> the freq response on the calls to the bulldog. Can you find out
RS> exactly what phone exchange technology that FNQ line is using ?

RB> It should not be too hard to talk to one of the blokes in
RB> the exchange here I will do that this week, I am out of here
RB> on the 9th (Sat) but this is a must before I go back to Bris.

Thanks, could be very interesting. See if he can say more than just
AXE too if its AXE coz there is a wide range of vintages with AXE.
I have tame tech here who actually does the installations of the
digital exchanges out this way who I can blow in the ear of on the
fine detail if you can produce the name they use for the technology.

RS> Particularly when people like Dave Hatch are getting real problems with
RS> what is supposed to be modern digital exchange technology now, it would
RS> be interesting to compare which ones use which exchange technology.

RB> I rang Dave H last night (connected at 31200) and was half
RB> way through Uploading a file (333K) to him when the cps
RB> started diving, It got down to 709cps then aborted. I am
RB> sure it was that trouble he was talking about, before. And
RB> I probably just hit in between the times he said it happens.

Be fascinating to see what it turns out to be due to. Presumably
some loading situation produces some pretty gross effect on the
channel. It took quite some time before the problem with clock
slip for modems was clearly identified.

Pretty important to get this one resolved too if its the technology
that they are planning to use to make all the Sydney exchanges digital.

RB> Though it could have been a mix of his problem and my line noise.

His problems sound so gross when the problem manifests that its
most likely just his problem, particularly when your line noise
never seems to matter a damn when calling say the bulldog or Paul.

Quite interesting actually that you get such immaculate calls to the
bulldog even with very audible deficiencys. V34 is pretty fucking good.

RS> Presumably atleast part of Dave Drummonds immaculate line
RS> is just because he is so close to the exchange itself.

RB> Well I could almost spit at the exchange from here as well.

Thats interesting, its certainly the common factor in the best two subs
lines we know about. And easy to understand too when its digitised at
the line card at each end and digital/fibre optic all the way between them.

RS> Are you still hearing the audible imperfections on your FNQ line
RS> on voice calls ? Interesting how V34 can handle them so well.

RB> YES, gets very bad some times.

Fascinating. Thats one deficiency with the extremely flash Courier
line probe data, it would be nice if that was visible on that too.

RS> Hell of an eye opener how useful the USR stats can be, its
RS> essentially a full bit of line test equipment auto on every call.

RB> You can't say that I'm sorry I bought this Courier,

Yeah, I could well do so my self just for the test capability alone.
Pity about the obscene price tho, and USRs attitude on the USR_Modems
echo on the SDL availability is a real turnoff too. Just what we need,
a flash design which allows very easy fiddling with the code in the
modem and they play silly buggers on access to the fucking code.

RB> The only thing I don't like is connecting at 26400 around
RB> Brisbane to some Rockwell stuff, Though I am now confinced
RB> it is all to do with the line there (and not the modems)

I think we will basically just have to live with that forever,
particularly as the whole point of V34 is to do the best it can
on the available line. Until we see lots more use of the PayTV type
cable anyway. Telstra is planning that too. Tho it will be interesting
to see if anything comes of ISDN now the coalition has won.

Still not clear what Optus plan on the internet stuff. If we do get
2Mb class links into our houses for similar money to what we pay for
a normal phone line now, all this dialup stuff is irrelevant.

RB> Why else do I get 28800 to an old VFC maestro at Strathpine, (Yes
RB> Paul, the one that I have to use S27=48 on.. otherwise it answers &
RB> hangs up immediately) everytime from up here and only ever a solid
RB> 26400 from Bris. Same settings and machines, just different lines.

Yeah, pretty conclusive. What do the session freq responses look like ?
