ZyXEL has always had trouble with terrible phone lines; at times, my 1496+
couldn't connect at all with them.

Rather, I think that the phone lines have improved to the point where the
slower protocols now get through.

That is a problem I've been wrestling with since I got mine. If your
operation permits, set the modem for *E1; it seems to help quite a bit.

That vaguely rings a bell; it may be automatic based upon your CND detection
settings. The only way CND can work is if the modem picks upon on the second
ring. Don't forget that the "ring" noise is actually generated by the modem,
and may not be quite in synch with what the telco does.
Try dialing the modem with a handset and listen for yourself to see exactly
when it picks up. If you aren't using the CND features, turn them off.

No - but I'm not using CND.

Don't bother with the exchange; I think the "ring count" problem is a feature
which you can disable, and the hanging problem is not going to get fixed by
an exchange.
PLEASE, PLEASE call ZyXEL and let them know about the hangs (or E-Mail
tech@zyxel.com). I've been badgering them for months, but apparently not
enough people are telling them they have a problem because they seem to think
I'm a crank.
