After keying all the cars in the lot, William had this to say to Bill
Arlofski:
BA>> Where do you ride, what kind of bike?
WB> I ride up hear in British Columbia, Canada. I like to ride the double
WB> track mostly, as the single track becomes stressful at times. You
WB> have more space to work with with the double track...know what I mean?
NOPE! Show me the nastiest singletrack you got. Stress and adrenaline
are what I live on.
I really enjoy the difficult/technical singletrack trails. Heck, what am I
saying? I actually LOVE it when there are ROCKS all over the place
My riding buddies hate me for that! They like the open/fast downhill. Nothing
technical, just hang on to your a$$ and keep your head low. Mountain fire
roads seem to turn them on.
WB> As for my bike...check out my message to Ron...it'll tell you what you
WB> want to know.
I jumped in late, so I might have missed the message, but I will scan back...
:)
BA>> Before it left the shop, I had them upgrade the 'low end' Shimano
BA>> Alivio components to Deore-LX (not TOP 'o the line, but close at
BA>> the time). I also had them install a Rock Shox Quad 21r on
BA>> front...
WB> Sounds good...the old silver 21r or the new yellow ones?
The '96 yellow Quadra 21R's.... Now, with all the new innovations in
suspension, I am going to either upgrade to springs (replace the MCU's) or
dig deep and buy a fork that is more stable, less lateral flex, etc...
BA>> Skipping over the V-brakes, and upgrading my diacomp-7 levers and
BA>> Deore-LX cantis to (hold on to your wallets!)
WB> Skipping the V's eh? Hrumph!
Seen 'em, tried 'em read all about them. Whenever the Magura hydros were
compared side by side, the V's came in second. Besides, for some reason
unknown to me, I have ALWAYS been the "gimme the high tech thing-a-ma-bob"
kind of person. I guess it is because I do not want to be let down and have
to say "well, I could have spent the extra $'s and I would not be
disappointed" Been this way all my life, I don't know how to stop...
Where's the off switch!?
BA>> !! Magura Hydraulics !! The Tomac model to be more precise.
WB> I test rode the mags before going to V-Brakes myself...they are a VERY
WB> good brake, don't get me wrong! But I found them heavy and the 'feel'
WB> just wasn't right...guess it's just personal preferance.
Are you sure about the 'heavy'? I am only asking since I can't picture being
able to feel an extra few (hundred?) grams on a bike that weighs in in the
25lbs range. (I am asking this in a "thinking outloud manner", no malice
intended)
True though, I have to get my bike out on the trails for the real test...
I am pretty excited... The brakes were just installed today, and after riding
around on mostly level surfaces, I am VERY pleased with the feel of these
things. No more death-grip as I speed towards certain doom...
Also, they do not seem to have the "on/off" feel that I have heard a few
people attribute to them. Maybe Magura has done some upgrading to this year's
line, an maybe the Tomacs have a different feel than the racelines/raceline
D's do... Maybe I am just blabbering on and on and on and really need to be
riding my bike instead!
BA>> Now if I can get my L_A_Z_Y butt off this chair, out of the
BA>> computer room, and onto my BIKE things should really get exciting
BA>> once again...
WB> Heh heh....If this damn snow and cold weather would go away, I'd could
WB> be out there more myself!
When it comes to cold weather I am a wuss. My riding buddies tried like HELL
to get me to go skiing... One reason I have never been:
Snow is cold.
Cheers! And here's to a HAPPY riding season!
