Not only has IBM stopped shipping at anything lower than 6250, they're
encouraging use of cartridge only.

There are card readers that will attach to an ISA bus, but not for me
. I suppose that if you absolutely have to do it then you grit your
teeth and spend the money, but IMHO they're far too expensive for what
they do.
