I have played with W2003 POP3/SMTP mail and got it working just for my
curiosity. I don't know what your problem is, but believe me, you HAVE been
located by spammers (if your mail ports are accessible from the Internet),
and they ARE trying to screw you.

So, it is possible that your problems are due to attempts to crack your
machine. My W2003 is behind an ISA firewall and about the only port
accessible is tcp/25 (SMTP). The W2003 computer hasn't suffered any damage
that I have noticed, and there haven't been many spam attempts, but I
regularly get relay attempts (I capture them with Network Monitor).

At command prompt, try running:
netstat -n
to see what network connections are active.

If you want to play, try Network Monitor and see what traffic you have.
