  My favourite Australian politician was Senator Reg Withers, a
Western Australian they called the toe cutter after a famous criminal
gang who made people talk by cutting their toes off with a bolt
cutter.

  He once said there are three rules in politics, and three only:

1.  never resign
2.  never admit you are wrong
3.  always kick someone when they are down.

  I have shaped my entire life on that advice (but I did resign once).
