Sorry, I was using "footer" in the old Word 4 for DOS sense - the
formatting-block trailer after an essentially ASCII document body.  Word's
changed a lot since then, but it's still a style-trailer, rather than
embedded-code program.

That "doc footer" was such a confusing construction that I'm
lashing myself with a wet noodle.  My apologies.

But the fast-save thing did spray old contents after the nominal
end-of-doc. I didn't know MS ever recommended that you turn it off for a
final save - I must have missed that in the Word 6 ===> early Word97
timeframe.
