subject: early El Nino spring ?

  Hi Ack,
TA>I am glad you mentioned spinach. Considering the problem El Nino
TA>has brought to many lettuce fields in California and Florida,
TA>the resulting relative scarcity of head lettuce will make spinach
TA>even more useful this season.
TA>Do you have a particular version you care more for?
Yes! I like semi-savoyed spinach like Melody, because the worst thing
about spinach is its dirt-trapping ability. Talk about true grit! :-)
The smoother the leaves, the less enamel-shivering sand and less
rinsing time before you can eat it.
Spinach is one of those early crops, like peas, that can go (as
seeds) into the ground as early as it can be worked. I can do that,
or start seedlings inside, and stick them in the ground inside a cold
frame for a very early crop. Around here, I can get up to 3 cuttings
if the hot weather doesn't strike, even for a few days, too early.
(90*F weather in May just about ruins the crop, speeding seed
   formation and bitterness.)
                      ...Sandra...
