The thing is doing *something*.  When I scan an image the status box in my
software specifically states that it's "getting red data", 
"getting green data",  and "getting blue data" in
succession,  and you can hear the mechanism make successive passes over the
document.  So it's doing *something* between those,  I'm just not sure
what...
