RL> I don't think you're going to hear a difference in the 5881s at lower

I dunno, then, but they were extremely trebly to the point where it
was almost painful. The stereotype of a Tele through a Silverface Twin
Reverb. I thought it was very odd, but after a couple more I was starting to
think it was normal. But Hendrix played Strats through Marshalls, like I was,
and his tone was a lot nicer.
Yeah, I had it clean, pushing it as loud as I could without killing
all inside the room, and then my processor in front. I even tried it without
the processor with the same results.
RL> Very common settings... the standard recipie for the blues is to plug a
RL> Strat into a Fender and put everything on "5".
And I consider that to be a decently fat tone. :)
RL> Probably not. Again, you've really got to push these things before
ajor
 RL> tonal differences appear.
I do push these things. I never play the DS below 4-5. Before I
replaced the preamp tubes, I pushed it at least to 6. At about 6 (previously
7) I start to get the beginnings of output distortion. And at that point
jumbo jetliners start getting turbulence and houses begin to move. :)
