SRG> On 3/8/97, George Erdner grokked "Prog. Rock defns.", and said to

SRG> MD> Can we go back to discussing music yet?
SRG> MD>
SRG> GE> OK.
SRG> you say "OK" and then totally fail to "discuss" ?????
You didn't ask any questions about music. You asked about musicians.
That's related to music, but it's still something different.
SRG> MD> Do you think King Crimson's live in Argentina set is worth the
ne
SRG> GE> No.
SRG> WHY NOT?
Because I think that the price of the recording is higher than the value
of the music recorded on the set.
SRG> MD> Are you going to go see the reformed Yes on tour this summer?
SRG> MD>
SRG> GE> No.
SRG> WHY NOT?
Because they aren't scheduled to appear at a venue that is within close
geographic proximity to where I am. And besides, I thought you wanted to
discuss music, not musicians.
SRG> MD> Do you think the die-hard Gentle Giant fans will ever tweek that
e
SRG> MD> album out of them as they have so desparately been trying to on
he
SRG> MD> internet for a couple of years now?
SRG> MD>
SRG> GE> No.
SRG> WHY NOT?
Because too many of the people who made up Gentle Giant have retired
from music. But what does that have to do with discussing the MUSIC?
Now, if you want to discuss MUSIC, what is your opinion on the use of a
mellotron or synthesiser to replicate the sound of an orchestra as
compared to actually using a real orchestra? Would "Days of Future
Passed" have sounded better if the Moodies would have used the Festival
Orchestra on the songs themselves, instead of just as bridges between
the songs? Or does the synthetic nature of the Mellotron add an extra
sonic dimension that is an improvement over the sound of the actual
instruments?
Or how about, would the music of Yes have sounded better if the lead
singer's voice weren't so thin and reedy? Would a vocalist with a more
full-bodied voice, like Ian Gillian, have improved the music, or
detracted from it? Better yet, what about if Annie Hallam (lead singer
of Renaisance) had done the vocals? Or is the tonal quality of the
singer's voice as important to the overall sound of the music as the
choice of instrumentation?
