Could be but I'm not certain any more . I remember during certification that
it was explained to me that Police use of radar was licensed in some way
under the departments emergency radio license. Of course radar certification
also stated thst recent unitsd were safe to operate for both operator and
target. The certified seemed to be more concerned with "estimating speed for
PC and huaranteed us that no one woyld not pass. We had one guy though....
But I digress bvack to topic. Radar guns and equipment are used daukt ub
soirts and other venues. Since certification was for LE purposes and court,I
don't KNOW that speed measuring of vehicles not resulting in LE penaltis
would require such license but thata license could be obtained by non LEOs .
Of course If the news station had employed a LEO to run the monitoring... BTW
even laser is now used bin diverse civilian aps such as monitoring road temps
so it ios niot such a stretch to believe that these tools should be limited
for police use, or will remain so I know it is hard but just like guns, there
are tools we use that we consider "ours" have a legitimate cibilian use. I
collect police badges and junk and now because one tv station put up a
special on carbon copy cops TN is now considering outlawingf sale of any part
of police uniform to civilians thus conceivably I coyuld be a criminal inbn a
reade with another collector for a patch from the 40's.
