A major difference between "fast save" and a normal save is that a =
fast save incrementally updated the file on disk instead of writing the =
whole file from scratch. Knowing this it is no surprise that the on = disk
image contains uninitialized data left over from previous saves.

Sorry, I was using "footer" in the old Word 4 for DOS sense - the
formatting-block trailer after an essentially ASCII document body. =
Word's
changed a lot since then, but it's still a style-trailer, rather than
embedded-code program.
That "doc footer" was such a confusing construction that I'm lashing =
myself
with a wet noodle. My apologies.
But the fast-save thing did spray old contents after the nominal =
end-of-doc.
I didn't know MS ever recommended that you turn it off for a final =
save - I
must have missed that in the Word 6 =3D=3D=3D> early Word97 timeframe.
