Unfortunately there are down sides to that.  When they changed to a
central dispatch here (after switching from a local to a provincial
police force) wait time for action increased from a few minutes to a
few hours.  Want a cop at night, you better hope you are not being
threatened with violence then.  If being robbed, they might show up
some time after the fact even if you call while it is in progress.
