I can understand that! :-))  Let's narrow things down a bit:
What SET command do you have in the environment?  Where are the Max files 
kept? What drive are you on when you run FB?  Is there a batch file involved, 
and if so could we see it please?  Exactly what message do you get from FB?
And anything else that you think is of use in tracking this down!
BTW, does everything else work as you'd expect?
