No! Because it forces them to lower seat prices or lose customers. I
don't have a problem with airlines using any competitive advantage, but when
being competitive means cutting every last cent to the point where safety
and reliabilty become an issue, then they should be forced to close down.
If Valujet is going to fly me from Tampa to New York on a twenty-year
old DC-9 for $100.00 one-way, and Delta is going to fly the same route with a
5 year old Boeing 737 for 200.00 one way, I'm not flying Valujet. I figure
the
extra $100.00 breaks down this way:
$50.00 extra to fly a newer airframe with less cycles on it.
$10.00/hour extra they paid a DELTA mechanic to spend an hour
making sure the new engine really is attached to the pylon
correctly.
$10.00/hour extra they paid a pilot who refused to takeoff in
marginal visibility minutes before a snow storm closed the
airport.
$5.00/hour extra they paid the First Officer to do an ACTUAL
walk-around of the aircraft.
$5.00 extra they paid for real tires on the gear, not retreads or
factory seconds.
$5.00 extra for the flight attendants thay actually DO know how
to handle an emergency.
$5.00 extra for the hazard materials they DIDN'T load into the
baggage compartment.
$5.00 Extra for the new flame-retardant cabin interiors
$5.00 for the CEO's Porche payments.
I think my odds are better flying the "real" airline.
