BL>> 500K? Of source? Bloody hell! What's it do, besides Telix and
BL>> zip? Can if cook a baked dinner?

PE>> How big do you think the Telix + zip source code come to in
PE>> total?

BL> I dunno, but uucico.exe is 40K and compress.exe is 17K. I'd guess
BL> that the source is about half that... 28K total.

Each line of C code you write takes up what, 40 characters on average in
the source file? It probably generates an average more like 5.

On the other hand, I could write a 100-line C program which just calls
every single standard C function, and since they're all in libraries, it
will drag in the entire C runtime library with such a small program.

So it's a bit silly slagging off at people's source code. Maybe it's got
comments in it and conditional compilation?

PE>> Taylor UUCP uses g-protocol (which I think is standard), but it
PE>> ALSO has Zmodem plus a slew of others.

BL> I have no affection for zmodem... it just happened to be there. It's
BL> a totally brain-dead protocol in 1997 with error correcting modems
BL> runnign at high speed.

Zmodem is brain-dead? Why?

PE>> They were more examples of correct filenames you should have
PE>> looked for on SPUG.

BL> I did a search on 'ucp' and found a whole lot of shit (none of it
BL> uupc, btw), but I've got all I need now (fxuucico and compress.exe).

It's 'upc' you should have searched on.

BL> I don't know why you don't do it the same way as me... get a public
BL> domain zmodem and zip for the Internet, compile it for Unix, and do
BL> the rest yourself.

Hopefully I will eventually have my own versions of everything. I'm a host
too, don't forget, I have to distribute the stuff I receive, not just read
it myself. But one step at a time!

BL>> 2. UUPC has is own archiver designed for Unix (not zip)

PE>> I think that if you try hard enough, you can use zip etc, but
PE>> the only thing that can easily be done is use the "compress"
PE>> format.

BL> You can't use zip... trust me on this, COMPRESS (gzip) is totally

Compress and Gzip are two different things. Gzip should be as good as pkzip.

Incidentally, someone (maybe you) sent me something compressed with gzip,
and according to my logs, it was upset because it couldn't find gzip in
/usr/bin (it's actually in /bin). So I've "copied" it to
/usr/bin, so if
"you" try again, it should work. The original message is likely
lost, leastways I couldn't find it anywhere.

BL> different. You're probably confused by some unzippers that recognise
BL> the file headers and adjust accordingly. In fact, compress is pathetic
BL> but I've got PD software that not only does the job but it handles the
BL> loony 12-byte header as well. I found it in a gateway package called
BL> gigo. The source for it is on your legendary Simtel (K-Tel?) CD under
BL> the name of COMP430S.ZIP. If you find it, I'd like to FREQ it from
BL> you... if the file name is not too complicated for me to understand.

:-) I thought I might have that on my Hobbes CDROM, but it wasn't obviously
there. I'll see if I can organize getting a list of all files on that ftp site.

PE>> Yes, I am of the understanding that my system will be sending
PE>> exactly the same format (of course this is really what I'm
PE>> after confirmation of). I wasn't dead sure exactly what I was
PE>> sending to you, all I knew was that there was something queued
PE>> up in a directory for you.

BL> Actually, you sent me nothing. It stalled at the password and then
BL> timed out. Jeezuz... haven't you got a log? Even *I've* got a log! Do

I have logs in various places, one of which prints directly onto my screen,
extremely annoying. That's how I knew you had called. In fact, Keith
appeared to call using Fidonet or something last night, very strange
messages in the log. I didn't think I had fidonet support at all, but I
don't really know what mgetty is capable of yet, I'm still on the basics.

BL> AHA!!! I'm pretty sure I've worked it out now. I misunderstood the
BL> format of the scripts in fxuucico. I expect to logon successfully at
BL> 8pm tonight (Sunday). I might even send you an insulting message to
BL> see if I can upload, and to check that I can insult people on the
BL> Internet successfully.

The newsgroups I have don't actually go to anyone else on the internet. I
know how to feed newsgroups that I fetch from the internet to you, but not
the other way around (yet). Although ones that other UUCP sites send to me
directly do (I think) go out to you automatically.

BFN. Paul.
