Have you got the same type of processor/OS as you had in the A3000?  Maybe
the FTP program doesn't work on the A4000 (I have found many programs that
don't work on A4000's, especially the '040's)

Another thing you might like to check out is the Maxtransfer amount set on
the drive.  I had problems with an IDE drive until I lowered this figure.

In the drive partitioning program (HDSetup) there are these magic numbers. 
Mine are set as:

Mask = 0x7fffffe
MaxTransfer=0xffffff

This seemed to make the world of difference for me.
