Check the specs by inet search (as likely there is no manufacturer support
on an old system like that) and if it's a chip, scrap it unless it has
sentimental value... been there, done that, no t-shirt but rather a hole in
my heart when I think about it :(

It's your decision.  Sounds like something I've seen and it will cost you
to fix... only you can decide if it's worth it or not.
