Quite by accident, I ran a downloaded GIF in UU-encoded format through
the UUDECODE.TTP program without eliminating the header with my word
processor.  But much to my surprise, the program did not crash or
display an error message.  Instead, it produced a perfect GIF
file.  How nice to find I don't have to take that time-consuming middle
step!
