BL> Where can I get UUPC?

PE> Off the Simtel CDROM? I tried ftp.clarkson.edu, but failed to
PE> connect. It was supposedly in the pub/uupc directory.

  What's a Simtel? Is it anything like a Dem-Tel or a K-Tel?

 BL> How big is it,

PE> The OS/2 version, available from here (I copied it off the Hobbes
PE> CDROM) is 500k. Oops, I tell a lie, that's actually the source
PE> code, which should compile for both DOS + OS/2. I ask again, does
PE> anyone have an MSDOS CDROM, if so, can you do a "dir upc /s" and
PE> see if anything is found.

500K? Of source? Bloody hell! What's it do, besides Telix and zip?
Can if cook a baked dinner?

BL> and why did it take you a month to set it up?

PE> I was setting up a server, on a new machine, instead of just
PE> installing the client, on MSDOS.

  I am not reassured...

You really are priceless, Paul. You get some heap of crap software,
spend a month trying to get it work with only partial success, and
then you *recommend* it! ROFL!!

BL> The SPCUG mentions it, but doesn't actually have anything but
BL> UUPC utilities. Everything else seems to need Binkley or some
 BL> other BBS system.

PE> BTW, Jeff is apparently running FXCICO or something, which
PE> someone told me was even better than UUPC.

From the look of your files list, it couldn't be much worse, whatever
it was! It's only 40K, btw, and it seems to do the Unix zmodem protocol
with several variations. I donlt suppose you know what one *you* are
using? It does things called y, g, and other Uni-wanker crap.

 PE> Anyway, I'd suggest
PE> see what Jeff reckons (and whether my system actually works!).
PE> Also, I'll ask some of my internet friends where to get
PE> UUPC from, if no-one here has it. In the meantime, here's a list
PE> of files I found from my file lists...

What am I supoposed to do with a 20K files list, Paul? All I want to
do is set up a system to get mail from you. Do I have to download
*all* that shit, or what? Which 500K do I download, and where do I
download it from? I am only *slightly* fascinated to know you have all
that stuff somewhere on your hard disc.

BL> or some other BBS system. There are all sorts of thingies that convert
BL> Fido messages (or BlueWave) to UUCP format for PCBoard and Wildcat, but
BL> nothing for UUPC.

PE> UUPC is just one implementation of UUCP. Just like Tinypoint,
PE> Binkley etc are all implementations of FTS-6.

I realise that. Is UUPC complete or do I need other shit besides. I
tell you what, Paul... you're talking me right out of this! All I want
is an equivalent Telix and PkZip. I can write my own batch file and
UCP2QWK.

BL> Do I have to set up a full BBS, messagebase and all

PE> No, not a full BBS, but yes, you will need a messagebase (but
PE> that's no different from your QWK messagebase).

Wanna bet? I don't have a messagebase of *any* kind, and I don't
want one, either. I only read 'em, I don't keep them for posterity.

BL> archiver and comms protocol package? And if that's the case,
BL> which one do you recommend?

PE> Yes, the comms etc all change (at least to start with). The UUPC
PE> package should have everything you need except the reader itself.
PE> At this stage I recommend UUPC, more because it's the "only"
PE> thing I've heard of before.

  Jeesus! Jeff's FX-UUCICO does zmodem, and that's great - 40K and it
works in DOS. I've found a thingie called compress.exe that unzips
drosebay.z header and all... so now what I need is a thingie that will
dial you up and log on, in DOS or Windows.

Let me summarise what I understand so far...

1. You are using UUPC.
2. UUPC has is own archiver designed for Unix (not zip)
3. UUPC has its own comm protocol (not zmodem)

  Thus... to communicate with *you*:

1. I have to use that same comms protocol. Is this called UCCICO?
If it is, then the problem is solved... I can use FX-uucico for
my comms program... IF you can tell me what UUCICO protocol you
    are using.

2. I have to use the same archiver. If drosebay.z is the format you
will send me, then the problem is solved and I can send the same
    thing back to you.

3. What remains is a way to dial you up and log on, and the format of
whatever I send you to tell you whether I want a download or an
upload or freq. Does UUCICO do that?

Regards,
Bob
