My old stainless steel Sharp (stamped April 1975) has a penchant for blowing HV
Rectifiers, though a new one would extend it's use another 2-3 years each time
(I found the ECG540, 12kV{at}600mA the best replacement. The spec'd replacement
burnt up in a week). Lots of popping noises and smoke . I finally got tired
of replacing the diode and bought a new one (Sharp of course). Yes, the old one
still works, I keep it for backup. That stainless steel behemoth cost me $800
in 1975, the new 2001 plastic model with turntable cost $100 . The only
difference is the old guy takes a little more time to heat leftovers & coffee,
but cooks just as good (anything over 8 minutes or so), especially rice.
Be well,
