I've asked a unix guru type friend about that. He said that generally, in
unix land the modem auto-answers. It is not done the other way like in the
bbs or fido scene.
He said there has never been a problem with it, as unix is multitasking, it
is generally always available to take the caller anyway.
So the answer to your question is what you suspected, the modem auto-answers.
