subject: useless, so far

In spite of me having some troubles with the Maxtor site, I was able (with
a little help) to get a hold of both the maxblast3.exe and powermax.exe
files. I proceeded to copy them over to the w98 box here, and make the
floppies...

Just rebooted this machine, trying each floppy in turn, with less than
optimal results.

The maxblast3 floppy goes as far as presenting me with some listings of
what it finds, I see drive model numbers and such, and that's about as
far as it gets. Apparently the program looks for a mouse (?), doesn't
find one, and aborts.

The powermax utility is worse. I get a screenful of graphic-based text,
at the end of which it tells me to press the F8 key to continue, any other
key aborts, so I did. This gets me to another, similar screen, with the
same line at the bottom -- only this time when I press F8 again, I get
dropped back to an A:> prompt.

How the heck are these supposed to work?

I need to get something going here with this drive, last night as I was
leaving the room the bbs kicked into midnight maintenance and I saw
"critical error on drive L" a couple of times. So last night I
didn't get to bed as early as I'd planned, spent a bit of time copying
files to other drives. And finished that up this morning, rather than
working on some of the other stuff I need to deal with here.
