One typically reads about making your cuts 1/4" above a bud at a 45
degree angle.  At a recent demonstration by local ARS members one
of them pointed out the 1/4" is a general rule of thumb, but it
really should be "the diameter of the branch".  If you are cutting
a cane that's 3/4" in diameter, that is likely to have a large
branch coming out of that bud, 1/4" above the bud COULD not give
the bud enough cane to fully develop or make a weak joint if it does.
... Computer Lie #1:  You'll never use all that disk space.
