FR>kk> Yep. He warn't no dummy. I think he was just a 'right'
FR>kk> personality, and as soon as things got rolling he seemed to turn
FR>kk> into an OT patriarch. In his time there was nothing implausible,
FR>kk> at first blush, about penis envy or hysteria. His mistake was
FR>kk> that he couldn't question those ideas when research didn't bear
FR>kk> them out.
FR>I read something about that in Skeptic Magazine, as I recall. He had
FR>believed that removing a fragment of a woman's nose bones would correct
FR>a mental or personality disorder she was suffering from. When she was
FR>sent to a hospital for extensive bleeding (she nearly died) the medical
FR>doctors removed a wad of cloth from her sinus and had to burn the wound
FR>shut.
That's really weird.
FR>His belief in an "Id" hasn't borne out but I think he was spot on when
FR>it comes to the Ego and the subconcious.
I agree with others that the discovery of the unconscious is one of
the greatest discoveries of all time. And that's the weirdest thing
about it: something that's an ordinary, central part of our lives
had to be discovered. Sort of like a flashlight that's only conscious
when it's turned on -- it would think it was conscious all the time.
Eventually it would begin to wonder about those moments when what
it was pointed at changed abruptly once in a while. It might at first
make up all kinds of philosphical or theological stuff to explain it.
FR>And his belief that dreams are significant also hasn't borne out.
I think dreams are significant, but it's too easy to make up all
kinds of nonsense about what they mean.
