Sparks?  Noises?  Wow...

We've had one fail.  The panel worked fine,  the dang thing just wouldn't
heat any more.  Control systems aside,  there just ain't that much to those
things,  you've got a big transformer,  a magnetron,  and a high-voltage
diode (that apparently can't be tested with a meter like ordinary diodes
can).  I'm working my way through a pile of FAQs I snagged that deal with
repairing stuff,  if I come across any on microwaves I'll let you know.
