CG>Ahhah! Thanks. Frequent watering should help. It seems to me (no
CG>expert) that this might be a case for shallow-waterings as the
CG>plants develop.
Shallow waterings produce weak, shallow root systems. It's much better
for the plant to fill its containers with roots that will dry out the
container in a reasonable length of time, then transplant when that
interval gets too short, rather than "save" a little time and effort
in transplanting.
Chris, that is one reason I really like the soil block system. The
first size is 1/2 inch cubes , in which a single (small) seed is
planted. There are 20 in a block. As soon as germination commences,
and the root hits bottom, the cubes can be transplanted into 2 inch
blocks, with a 1/2 inch square middle. You just plunk 'em in, press
slightly to make sure the sides and bottom have a bit of contact, and
voila, your first (and only) transplanting for most cultivars is
over. It's relatively mess free, and separate cubes can be given to
others w/o tearing up all the root systems in the flat.
