 last time I looked "32 bits" was just 24 bit colour with the pixels 4-byte
 aligned  and the extra 8 bits just get ignored. Some video cards don't map
 the extra 8 bits onto physical memory at all. Having the pixels
 4-byte alligned helps the CPU to address them and write them in a single
 operation. and results in a performance increase for pixel-orientated
 operations.
