This is something my daughter, Teresa Young, e-mailed me from college in
Wisconsin. Thought it might be appropriate to post here ... Please direct
any responses to her, not me!

Dear Friend:
We would like to bring to your attention an environmental disaster in
progress. As you read this, thousands of gallons of sulfuric acid
solution are being pumped into a copper mine in White Pine, MI. This
is part of a 2 year pilot project to extract the last drabs of copper
by solution mining a played-out conventional mine. This process puts
the entire Lake Superior ecosystem and the surrounding areas at
great risk of contamination from the acid. The US Environmental
Protection Agency has already decided to allow the Copper Range
Mining Company to implement this pilot program. The decision whether
or not to continue this project after the two-year period lies in the
hands of the EPA board. If allowed to continue, 11 billion gallons
of sulfuric acid will be pumped into the mine, which is bound to
leak. If ingesting only a few drops of sulfuric acid will kill a
human, imagine the effect of billions of gallons in our ecosystem.
If this situation worries you, please help us convince the EPA to
bring this project to an abrupt end. You can contact EPA board
members at 77 West Jackson Boulevard
Chicago, IL 60604
or you can call Jodi Traub, director, at 312/8860126 to express your
concern. For more detailed information about this situation you can
email any of the following @wheeler.northland.edu

Please forward this letter to everyone you know.
Thank you,
