Hi John.
John Allen sent Andres Valloud:
JA> While some people are completely satisfied with these, some are not
JA> and desire a better sound. The end result is a never ending pursuit of
JA> exact reproduction of a live performance.
Did you mention live performance as an example or is it the general rule?.
I'm asking so because most music I hear is NOT from live shows or so...
anyways I guess that's not the case.
JA> Take a ride to a "high end" stereo shop....not Best Buy
JA> or Curcuit City or Sears, and bring a couple of your best CDs. Demo a
JA> couple units and hear the difference for yourself.
I'll take note of what I can find and post the results here for additional
advice. I should test the different units with the same speakers, shouldn't
I?. Should I use my own headphones I already know instead if I'm not allowed
to?. Could it happen then that I will never find the appropiate speakers for
the amp I liked?.
JA> The Watts Per Channel each amp is capable of is not what the
JA> average audiophile is after. The more watts your amp is capable of
JA> delivering, the better control it can maintain over your speakers.
Yep... it takes more wattage to start noticing the unit distorting!.
JA> The watts per channel also has little to do with your amps actual
JA> output. The amp will "peak" depending upon the frequency being
JA> duplicated, among other things. So even though your little meter is
JA> showing you 5 watts, your running anywhere from under 5 watts to over
JA> 40 in a single song.
I will describe my observations better. Some years ago I was fascinated with
that and started to make my own experiments. Like, what sounds make the amp
peak, big clashes, the main bass or drums and that sort. Anyways, while these
experiments were run I used the amp at an 1w per channel average (AVERAGE),
with occasional peaks of at most 2w. Okay, maybe if I run the unit at 5w, the
peaks could reach 20w (really worst case or so). I understand that the more
watts the amp can handle the better it will amplify, but what I also mean is
that when one reaches 200w speakers and 1kw amplifiers for using just 5w and
getting deaf in the process... well...
JA> PA systems and PA System amps and speaker have nothing to do
JA> with high end audio.
What is PA exactly?. From the context I guess that's something like mini's
quality or so... but I don't know what does it mean exactly.
I also read your next message about the message I'm answering to. And that's
ok. I mean, I wasn't offended at all. I'm also taking note about your comment
on the faq. Well, it seems people who make the faqs are just happy with it
)
(I mean, the people who ask the faqs in the first place).
